HAMKA stands haji abdul malik karim amrullah. He was born in molek,meninjau,west sumatra,indonesia on february 17th,1908. His father build thawalib sumatra in padang panjang. There hamka learn about the science of region and the arabic language. In addition to his father studied region,hamka was also studied on several well-known islamic scholars such as sheikh ibrahim musa, sheikh rashid ahmad, sultan mansour and good ki hadikusumo.
In 1927 hamka as a religious teacher at plantation high megan and padang panjang in 1929. Hamka 1957-1958 years as a lecturer at the islamic university of jakarta and padang panjang. Hamka interested in some science such as : literature, history, sosiology, and politics.
In 1928 hamka become chairman of muhammadiah in padang. In 1929 he built “training center muhammadiah preachers” two years later became chairman of muhammadiah in west sumatra and on 26 july 1957 he became chairman of the indonesian ulema council. Hamka has written several books such as: Tafsir al-azhar(5 jilid) and novel such as ;tenggelamnya kapal van der wijck, di bawah lindungan ka’bah, merantau ke deli, di dalam lembah kehidupanand so on. Doctor honoris causa hamka gained from al-azhar university(1958),, doctor causa from the university kebangsaan malaysia(1974), and on 24 july 1981 hamka died.
